I wish I could pinpoint the moment in Foodie History that Sweet Potato Fries went viral. I feel like there was a turning point in the last 5 to 10 years that they exploded, and I am so glad that they did. Our Crispy Sweet Potato Wedges are some of the BEST. They are quite crisp and flavorful thanks to a combo of garlic powder, salt, basil, and a pinch of sugar (yes sugar!). Then when done and you toss them with some minced basil and BAM.
I dipped these guys in some Sriracha Mayo the first time I made them, and for this go, I had this yummy Chipotle Raspberry Sauce from Trader Joe’s. You could do a variety of things though – ranch, a maple mustard, spicy ketchup, or whatever you desire. Enough about that, now go forth and make our Crispy Sweet Potato Wedges and now go check out a recap of eating vegan in Kansas City, Missouri after the recipe!
Pin Our Crispy Sweet Potato Wedges
- 3 sweet potatoes, cut into wedges
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp fresh basil minced
- oil for coating (optional)
- Preheat the oven to 450.
- Cut your sweet potatoes into wedges and place them in a large bowl.
- Coat them in oil or water in the boil so the spices will stick.
- Mix all your spices and sugar together (but not the basil), pour on top of the potatoes, and use your hands to mix them all together.
- Place on a non-stick baking sheet and bake for 28 minutes.
- When done, place the broiler on high for 3 minutes and after that remove from heat.
- Toss in the minced basil.

Blue Sushi Sake Grill: Vegan Sushi!
We also ate at Blue Sushi Sake Grill which was DELICIOUS. It is a non-vegan restaurant but many of their specialty rolls are vegan. My favorite was the Cowgirl – think sushi meets a burger but it’s vegan. It was so tasty we ordered an extra for dessert!

Mud Pie Bakery
We went to Mud Pie on two different occasions and everything there is incredible. Their savory scones are filled with delicious vegan sausage and their desserts are sinfully sweet. I think my favorite was the Salted Chocolate Caramel I got (bottom right in the photo). I am sort of glad there’s not a place like that close to me; I’d go there entirely too often.
I would definitely go to Kansas City again. If you ever find yourself there, you’ll have plenty of veg food to eat! Let us know in the comments cities you were surprised to be vegan friendly!
Krunkwich in Des Moines
We stopped at Krunkwich on our way there and on our way back and easily the best thing on their menu are the Kim Chi Tater Tots! INCREDIBLE. I’ll let their menu description do all the talking. KrunkTots are tossed in Krunkspice and smothered with vegan MisoWhiz, topped with House Made Kimchi, Veg Unagi sauce, Gochuhang, toasted Sesame Seeds
